I listened to the audio version of this book, read by the author, and it was a wonderful experience。 I already have a deep lengthy love for the state of California as I was born here and lived here most of my life, and I've hiked in the Sierra Nevada Mountains。 Reading this book deepened my love for the mountains - and encouraged me to want to go back。 I would never be as adventurous as the author of this book with all his cross-country off-trail wanderings, but I do understand the attraction fo I listened to the audio version of this book, read by the author, and it was a wonderful experience。 I already have a deep lengthy love for the state of California as I was born here and lived here most of my life, and I've hiked in the Sierra Nevada Mountains。 Reading this book deepened my love for the mountains - and encouraged me to want to go back。 I would never be as adventurous as the author of this book with all his cross-country off-trail wanderings, but I do understand the attraction for wild places and that amazing feeling of spiritual-emotional fullness we get when we're in the presence of Sierra grandeur。I liked how this book varied the subject matter with chapters ranging from personal hiking memoirs to geology to biographies of famous hikers and authors, and more。 This kept me interested and involved, and my attention never lagged。 I'm so grateful for the time I spent listening to the author's stories of hiking the high Sierra, and sympathized with his love for the lost friends and fellow hikers。Having only audio-read this book, I now am wishing for a copy of the hardcover version with all the photographs, for reference。 There are parts of this book I'll reread and parts I need to refer back to - such as equipment suggestions and more Sierra books to read。Thanks to the author, Netgalley and the publisher for a review copy。 All thoughts in this review are my own。 I'm a great fan of the state of California and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and of this book。 I am always happy to read books about California。My Goodreads Group: California ReadingFor the Clean Reads people: I guess you could call this a trigger warning for language。 There were a few words in this book that some might not want to read, but they didn't bother me enough to give it a lower rating。 I'm giving it five stars based on the value this book has for me。 。。。more

Thank you Netgalley for the advance audiobook copy of The High Sierra by Kim Stanley Robinson in exchange for an honest review。 I was born and raised in the Sierra Nevada mountains and even named after them。 I've been backpacking and camping in the mountains my whole life and even my best friend owns Dardanelles Resort。 Yet this novel took me by surprise and gave me a whole new perspective on the mountains。 Thank you Netgalley for the advance audiobook copy of The High Sierra by Kim Stanley Robinson in exchange for an honest review。 I was born and raised in the Sierra Nevada mountains and even named after them。 I've been backpacking and camping in the mountains my whole life and even my best friend owns Dardanelles Resort。 Yet this novel took me by surprise and gave me a whole new perspective on the mountains。 。。。more
Annarella,
I knew Kim Stanley Robinson as a sci-fi writer but I appreciated this work that is a mix of experiences, travelogue, and science information。He did a good job in explaining and illustrating placed and was a good narrator。I'd like to visit the places and this could be a good guide。Highly recommended。Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine I knew Kim Stanley Robinson as a sci-fi writer but I appreciated this work that is a mix of experiences, travelogue, and science information。He did a good job in explaining and illustrating placed and was a good narrator。I'd like to visit the places and this could be a good guide。Highly recommended。Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine 。。。more
Janalyn Prude,
The high sierras, a love story by Tim Stanley Robinson is about of course hi see ours in California。 Anyone who loves hiking all the great outdoors will totally appreciate this book。 He started his love affair with the mountains in the 70s and it goes on until today。 Throughout his different hikes the people he went with have changed slightly but for the most part have stayed the same。 The two best friends he started this adventure with have a love affair with the mountains as well。 Although I d The high sierras, a love story by Tim Stanley Robinson is about of course hi see ours in California。 Anyone who loves hiking all the great outdoors will totally appreciate this book。 He started his love affair with the mountains in the 70s and it goes on until today。 Throughout his different hikes the people he went with have changed slightly but for the most part have stayed the same。 The two best friends he started this adventure with have a love affair with the mountains as well。 Although I do think Terry has since passed away。 I did love the chapter on the different names and how they got their names and how they get new names in the region。 I wish there was more about the law in legends that are all around the mountain range。 No matter what places in the world I read about I seem to always go back to the Sierras it reminds me of the wild west and an unchanging playground for those who love the outdoors。 I really enjoyed this book and thought Mr。 Robinson did a great job narrating it and although it was long it was nice feeling like a castaway in his backpack throughout the mini hikes in the book。 I was given this book by Nat Galli and I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any grammar or punctuation errors as I am blind and dictate my review, But all opinions are definitely my own。 。。。more
Dayton,
A deeply enjoyable romp through Kim Stanley Robinson’s lifetime of backpacking in the Sierra Nevada, the geology and history of the region, and other assorted musings。 Some sections will be more compelling than others depending on one’s interests and one’s familiarity with the region, but it was a pleasure to read that made me desperately want to go for a backpacking trip。I was also lucky enough to interview him about it for my podcast Storytelling Animals: https://podcasts。apple。com/us/podcast。 A deeply enjoyable romp through Kim Stanley Robinson’s lifetime of backpacking in the Sierra Nevada, the geology and history of the region, and other assorted musings。 Some sections will be more compelling than others depending on one’s interests and one’s familiarity with the region, but it was a pleasure to read that made me desperately want to go for a backpacking trip。I was also lucky enough to interview him about it for my podcast Storytelling Animals: https://podcasts。apple。com/us/podcast。。。https://open。spotify。com/episode/3hzM。。。 。。。more
